On Friday Scotty and I had an ultrasound that informed us that we are expecting our second daughter! A little surprised and a lot excited, we drove home from our appointment each saying ‘Wow, another girl?!’ I read somewhere in my first pregnancy that 80% of pregnant women think they are having a boy. I fell into that statistic big time! I think because my pregnancy has been so different this time than last, that I figured something had to be different. Since two is our magic number, I think there are some pretty great benefits to having the same gender child. I hope that my girls grow up to be the best of friends and don’t fight… not one time! 😉 I grew up with two brothers and my best friend Kim also had two brothers. How we BOTH ended up with TWO GIRLS is beyond me! The tea parties, dance classes, singing, dancing, and chatting are going to take over our lives!! I wonder sometimes how I will handle two girls, but I see Kim do it and I know that there are some really great things to come! We are so excited to meet our baby, but in the mean time we will enjoy our sleep!!

Since finding out we are expecting child number two, Scotty and I have decided that after this school year, I will become a stay-at-home mom. We have been so fortunate in the past two years to have my mom and Maica help out in watching Kayden on the few days I have had to go to work. With two children we decided we have to make some changes. It just seems the right decision for our family for me to take a leave of absence from my job to stay home and raise the kids full time. The decision was a hard one. With the economy being so crappy right now, it’s hard to walk away from a secure job. However, the job I do (special education teacher) is a challenging one that often seems to produce more stress in my life than anything else. I really like what I do, but I think I am just ready for a break. Not that I think raising two small children is a break by any means, but I think I’m ready for that change. If I am going to be challenged, it might as well be by my own kids, right?! 😉 Since making my decision to stay at home, going into work has been a real struggle. I think that knowing my time is limited, it makes the time I have left seem like it’s crawling by. I want nothing more than to just be at home with the one child I have. I have a committment to my job that I will fill, but it isn’t always easy! I’m due June 6 and because Kayden was two weeks early we are planning for an early arrival of number two. Even if the baby isn’t early, a little extra time preparing won’t hurt! I have five more months. I can do this!

Here are the highlights of the week so far.

This is Kayden and Eli at the park with Maica.

And here is Kayden playing dress up with Maica while Eli takes a nap. It’s not too often that she is the one awake and Buddy is sleeping. I’m sure Maica just loved her girl time! 🙂

Kayden got to spend the entire day with Nam today. Nam doesn’t too often get to take an entire day with Kayden, so today was a rare treat for the both of them. I put Nam in charge of teaching Kayden how to climb and and come down the stairs. To my complete surprise, she accomplished this task!! Although, I have to take her word for it because Kayden refused to do any physically demanding tasks once Mommy got home! Story of my life!! They also made a fort, rearranged the toy chest, rode her bike, and took nature walks around the complex. It’s no wonder she wanted to go to bed at 7:00 tonight! Thanks Nam for a fun day of exploration and sweet, sweet memories!

Kayden demanded she wear Nam’s Ugg boots. Surprisingly they weren’t too big and she was able to walk around in them. Big foot… like mother like daughter!

In the past two days I have noticed a new trend in Miss Kayden’s behavior. The art of the tantrum has been mastered folks! I said it here first, at 18 months we were at the best it’s gonna get. Kayden is 19 months and boy is she learning to pack on the ‘tude! It all started yesterday at bed time when she refused to give me her toothbrush and insisted on sleeping with it. When I pried it from her firm grasp the body went rigid, face turned red, and huge crocodile tears came immediately! Being as it was the end of the day (for both of us), she snuggled with her toothbrush last night! Last night’s tantrum had nothing on today experience!

Maica told me about this cool art studio for kids (Art Soup in Encinitas) that lets kids get all messy doing fun art projects. The place charges $10 and doesn’t even ask that you clean up after your kid! This art studio is for kids ages 2-12, but as long as you are past the ‘oral stage’ and your kid can walk, they make an exception for you. I wish they didn’t!!! Maica mentioned that Kayden should wear something that I wouldn’t mind getting paint on. Well, knowing my non-risk taker, I figured I didn’t have to worry about paint getting on anything! I chose to put her in a cute outfit and chose to wear white pants and a new shirt myself (that, I admit, was just stupid!). So we get to the art place and after Kayden puts on her protective smock she heads right for the dry stuff- legos. Good girl!

So much for being past the ‘oral stage’!!

After some gentle persuasion by me, she decides to check out the paint. She was having a great time painting on the different easels. I wasn’t completely sure of the rules so I was trying my hardest to keep the paint brushes in the proper area. I think this is when we started to go down hill. Each time I took a brush from her the feet started pounding and the shrieks started making their first appearances.

And then we made our way to the car! They had an old Volkswagon Bug in the middle of the studio just caked with paint. This, I thought (stupid, stupid!), would be fun.

Sure, painting the car was fun, until I tried to take the paint brush from Kayden as she started to run for the employee room! After redirection she headed for the white chairs with the same purple paint brush! I’m sure she wouldn’t have been the first child to paint on the furniture, but I’m just not that laid back of a mom that I could just let her run around the studio with washable paint!! (Yeah, I know I’m lucky I have a girl!) Once I caught her she threw herself to the ground and started shrieking at a pitch that you’d think only dogs could hear! I should mention that at 10:00 in the morning the other children at the studio were about 6 or 7 and were working on a structured art project listening to the serene music playing. I mean, the setting couldn’t have been worse for this tantrum! It was so obvious that we were too young to be participating in the creation of art. So of course during the fit of rage my sweet child had, she managed to get paint all over her clothes, hair, and face. And let’s also mention my white pants and pretty much ruined! After hosing her off we ran out of that place. I looked at the clock once I strapped her in the car and saw that we used up just under 30 of our 90 minute session!! I really don’t think we’ll be back any time soon :(.

I’m not sure what I learned from this experience other than my child can really do a number on embarrassing me. I also think that I need to learn to relax. There can’t be two people fighting for control- especially out in public. There are things I could have done differently to have avoided this meltdown. It’s just so hard because you want to explain things and then you realize that your child is not yet a rational human and can’t possible understand your rational explanations. I know this isn’t the last tantrum I’ll experience (of course I know this, she did it again on our walk this afternoon in the middle of the street as I’m trying to control my unruly pugs!). So other than today’s two tantrums, I know that our public appearances are going to be more of a challenge as my little princess becomes more and more aware of that she has all of the control!

Here is the calm before the storm of tantrum number 2…. She insisted that she should push Jinx rather than I push her!

Facing each day… one tantrum at a time!!

Kayden has always been a very cautious child. She still has no interest in climbing the stairs and sits on the counter while I buzz around the kitchen making meals. For whatever reason, we decided to get her a Barbie Quad for Christmas. This is a self-controlled vehicle that moves quickly and makes a lot of noise. The day she got it she wanted nothing to do with it. The next few days she would walk by it, touch it, and keep walking. Then, after watching Eli zoom around knocking into things and having a great time, she decided to push the button. And then she was really motivated to try this thing when she saw her Mimi having such a good time on it!

After watching Mimi give it a spin around the house, she decided to try it out!

Kayden is an avid reader and she certainly has her favorite nap time/bedtime stories. When she was younger I could actually read the books to her and get somewhat lost in the story myself. Now, there is just too much print on the page for her attention span. I basically either make up a quick story to match the pictures or I just describe the picture and point out things she knows. Her favorite book for far too long was First 100 Words book. After she learned to identify every picture in that book she moved on to her Elmo books. I have no clue why Kayden loves Elmo- she loves her Elmo doll, Elmo books, and Elmo bath toys. But, she has never watched Elmo on TV! Either way, she loves Elmo so we are reading her Sesame Street books now. Luckily, the books are short and I can vary the story to keep my own interest!

Since I do all the reading, I couldn’t capture a picture of her with her books. So here she is rocking her tu tu today!
