A few months ago all of our South O friends decided to take the kids to Disneyland for a few days. We have traveled all together one time and it was a disaster- too many people stuck inside of a cabin in the snow sharing cooties. On that trip we had 4 kids, 1 toddler, 3 infants, and 8 adults. It’s been almost two years since that trip, so we decided to try something different this time. Mission success!! The Peterson family and us headed up Tuesday and the other two families met up the next day. We always like to stay two nights and give the girls three full days at the park. One of the major benefits to staying at the Disneyland hotel is that we have a place to go back for naps and adult recharge. I actually didn’t take any pictures this time, so I stole a few from the other mom’s who were better on top of things. In my defense, I wasn’t feeling very well for the whole trip, so my goal was to keep a smile plastered on my face and not lose sight of the tissues!! All-in-all, we had a GREAT time! We especially liked night #2 because we stayed in a three bedroom suite with Buddy and his family! A lot of kids, a lot of rooms (to destroy!), and a lot of fun was had!! Oh Disney, you get us every time!! Can’t wait to go back!!
First Field Trip
Kayden had her first field trip last week and I was one of the chaperones. We were supposed to go to the Birch Aquarium, but circumstances happened and we got rerouted to SEA WORLD! No, I haven’t seen Black Fish (nor do I ever intend to!), so I had a great time! We were able to go on a ride, go through many animal exhibits, and went to a special educational Shamu Show. The park was empty! You could have thought they closed the park for just our Kinders!
There are only 4 girls in Kayden’s class, so naturally I got the girl group! Minus the headsplitting screams the whole car ride to and from the park, they were all great! I got to see Kayden interracting with friends and I might have had to step in once or twice to make sure the girls were all being nice and fair to each other! 😉 It was a LONG day of walking and exploring, but we had a great time!
Diagnosis for Kooper
Kooper and I have had a long past week or two. I brought Kooper in to the vet because he had a pretty nasty eye infection. He’s always had eye issues, but this time they looked red and had other issues that are frankly too gross to describe. So in he went! While there I told the vet that he’s been super itchy and that he’s on heavy duty flea meds and on Benedryl, which wasn’t helping. So when all was said and done we had a prescription coming in from Arizona for his eyes and a heavy duty cortizone prescription for his itchies. That was super cheap $$!! 😉 So home we went. Almost immediately Kooper started drinking water ALL day and having accidents ALL day. This was super alarming. So back we went to the vet. Well, turns out the thirst is a side effect of the itchy meds. Immediately he was taken off of the medication (there went a $60 prescription!). The vet said if his behavior didn’t change in 48 hours I was to bring him back in. And you guessed it, nothing changed!!! I gave him an extra day to see if the meds needed a little more time to get out of his system and three days later, they hadn’t. So back to the vet we went. The vet informed me that there were about 20 different reasons he was still having thirst/accident issues. To figure out which one it was, they needed to run some tests. I was almost positive it was the meds still lingering in his system, but the extreme thirst had me concerned enough to go ahead with the testing. $450 later and we have a diagnosis! Kooper has diabetes-osis (Doc McStuffins terminology!). So what does this really mean? Two injections a day (bi-monthly prescriptions of both insulin and needles) at exactly 12 hours apart (that should be easy/convenient, right?), regular visits with the vet for blood testing (that’s sounds cheap, right?!), and whole slew of health issues that are commonly seen with diabetes (i.e. cataracts and teeth issues- you know, special ones that pugs don’t already come standard with!).
So here is my twice daily routine with my favorite dog, Kooper (he must be my favorite to go through all of this with, right?!)
First up, we treat the eyes. He gets a drop in each eye. He is super calm and doesn’t resist at all. Scouts honor. Then I rub an ointment on his eyes to help with artificial tears. Again, good patient!
Next up, insulin!

After he eats (and he better eat or else it throws me in a tail spin as far as how much insulin to give him!). I get 7 mm in the syringe (I don’t know what mm is, but it’s on the syringe!). The fun part is, I better make sure there are no bubbles in the insulin, and I better make sure it’s the exact amount. Because guess what? If I am wrong on either, he could go into hypoglycemia and that could mean anything from being lethargic, to non-responsive, the seizure, to death. So, are we having fun yet?! Luckily, Kooper is GREAT at getting his shot. Because let me tell you, if he resisted at all to the shot, I’d be shit out of luck. Sorry for my language, but this is serious! So as I sit and write all this, I am on day one! So far he is acting normal and still kind of drinking a lot, but no accidents! We go back Monday to check his levels and likely add more insulin. They err on the side of caution and start off with very little insulin because as I mentioned, if we give the wrong amount it’s pretty catastrophic. It’s really only that serious if I give too much. If it’s too little he still pees the bed and drinks water all day. So this is what is consuming my life right now, and that’s okay. I have some (read, A LOT!) of reading to do in order to be knowledgeable enough to handle anything that could go wrong. I love Kooper dearly and I will do this for him. He is my Mr. Magoo and all I want is for him to be healthy. Even if that means daily injections and wrestling him to put drops in his bulbous eyes! I. Will. Do. Anything. AND EVERYTHING (Sorry Scotty, this could get expensive!)
Punkin’ Patchin’
Today I took the girls to the local pumpkin patch. We had so much fun!! First up, a hay ride! Not sure why they call it a hayride because we took a tractor on a dirt path to a patch of HUGE pumpkins. No hay. But it was fun nontheless! We took a bunch of pictures and even sat on a few of the bigger pumpkins. These pumpkins are so large that you can literally see them from the freeway- which to be fair, is right next to the pumpkin patch, but you can see them as you fly by! I always kind of thought they were either fake or strategically placed there, but I was wrong. They were all still on the vines!
Next, we hit the corn maze! Now this was surprising! I wasn’t sure what to expect in a corn maze, but the maze was huge! There were many different directions and different ways to get out. I was only okay because I could see over the corn and if I had to cheat to get out, I could! Kayden had a blast leading the way and running the entire time. Kloey and I stayed close behind!
After the corn maze we went and picked out our pumpkin. It was perfectly round and ‘perfectly perfect’ as Kloey would say! Then we hit up the face painting. Both girls decided on a blue sea horse. They turned out great!
After a hay ride, run through the corn maze, pumpkin picking, and face painting, we went out to lunch!! I have never taken the girls out to eat by myself before. We had a good time!! Thanks girls for a great girls day out!!
Beach Nights
The weather in Oceanside (and all of Southern California!) has been HOT!! The best way to beat the heat is to trade in our afternoon walk to an afternoon bike ride to the beach! Every evening we do something to get out of the house. We use to either take a walk to the beach or a bike ride around the neighborhood. Too hot for all that, so we put on our suits and head to the beach to chase to waves almost every night. Scotty brings his ’emergency snow shovel’ (because that ‘s necessary to have in Southern California!) and he digs the girls a big hole. The girls love jumping in the water and gathering beach treasures. Kloey got taken out by a wave a few months ago, so she is approaching the wave jumping with extreme caution. She stays on the sand and makes sandcastles while Scotty and Kayden go collect rocks and shells in the water. I stay somewhere in between. The water is cold! 😉 Here are a few pictures from last night at the beach. We’ll be headed back again tonight!
